Logic Problem Solution:
Potato Chip Swap
From the introduction, no two of the boys ended up simply exchanging
potato chips. By clue 1, the chips Chris brought ended up with the
boy who had cheddar cheese chips in his lunch. By clue 4, the Pringle
boy's potato chips ended up with the one who brought salt & vinegar
chips to school. So, Chris and the Pringle boy are two different
boys. Since the Pringle boy didn't have the cheddar cheese potato
chips to start with (9), the boy who brought the cheddar cheese chips
for lunch is a third lunchmate to Chris and the Pringle boy. Similarly,
since Chris didn't have the salt & vinegar chips in his lunch (7), the
boy who started with the salt & vinegar chips is a fourth lunchmate to
the three already named. By clue 5, the boy who started with the sour
cream & onion chips ended up eating the cheddar cheese chips. Since
Chris's chips ended up with the boy who brought cheddar cheese chips
(1), from the introduction, Chris didn't end up with the cheddar cheese
chips, or the two boys would have simply exchanged chips. So, the boy
in clue 5 is either the fifth one to the four already enumerated or is
the Pringle boy. If he were the fifth boy, Chris's chips would have
gone to the boy who started with cheddar cheese chips (1) and the
Pringle boy's chips would have gone to the boy who brought salt &
vinegar chips (4). Since Chris didn't eat the salt & vinegar chips (7),
the salt & vinegar chips would have had to have gone to the Pringle
boy--but then the Pringle boy and the one who brought the salt & vinegar
chips would have exchanged varieties, contradicting the introduction.
So, the Pringle boy brought the sour cream & onion chips and ate the
cheddar cheese chips. The boy who started with salt & vinegar ended up
with sour cream & onion (4). Since Chris's chips went to the boy who
brought the cheddar cheese chips (1), the fifth boy's chips went to
Chris and the fifth boy ended up with the salt & vinegar chips. By
clue 2, the Utz boy ended up with Eric's chips, so the Utz boy didn't
start with cheddar cheese chips or he would have gotten Chris's (1).
The Utz boy didn't end up with salt & vinegar, since Eric didn't bring
salt & vinegar (13). The Utz boy isn't Chris (10). The Utz boy is
the one who brought salt & vinegar and got sour cream & onion from
Eric Pringle (2). Neither the Lay boy (3) nor the Wise boy (6) started
with barbecue potato chips, so the Dorito boy did. Since he didn't
end up with salt & vinegar chips (11), he is Chris. The boy who started
with cheddar cheese chips ate barbecue (1) and is the Wise boy (3).
The Lay boy started with rippled potato chips, which Chris ended up
eating. Alex isn't Wise (6) or Lay (8) and is Utz. By clue 12, Donny's
last name is Lay, and Ben's is Wise. The five boys swapped potato
chips as follows:
- Alex Utz, salt & vinegar for sour cream & onion
- Ben Wise, cheddar cheese for barbecue
- Chris Dorito, barbecue for rippled
- Donny Lay, rippled for salt & vinegar
- Eric Pringle, sour cream & onion for cheddar cheese
