Logic Problem Solution:
The Young Actors Do Shakespeare
The five young actors are listed in clue 1: James, Mr.
Anthony, the one appearing at the Summerset Center for the
Arts, the one playing Pinch in A Comedy of Errors, and
the one with the role of Mustardseed in A Midsummer
Night's Dream. By clue 6, Mr. Cesar isn't the actor
working at the Summerset Center; and by clue 12, Mr. Cesar
isn't James. In clue 1, then, Mr. Cesar is one of the two
playing Pinch and Mustardseed. Similarly, Mr. Hamlett isn't
James and isn't in the Summerset Center production (14), so he is
the other of Pinch and Mustardseed in clue 1. By clue 2,
neither Mr. Cesar nor Mr. Hamlett is appearing at the Union
Bridge Amphitheater, so in clue 1, the actor working at the
Union Bridge Amphitheater must be James or Mr. Anthony--by
clue 8, Mr. Anthony. Neither James (5) nor Mr. Anthony (13)
has the role of Wart in Henry IV, so the actor in the
Summerset Center Shakespearean production has the role of
Wart. He isn't Mr. Otelo (9) and is then Mr. McBeth. By
elimination in clue 1, James is Otelo. James Otelo isn't
working at the Valley Playhouse or Walbrooke Theatre (15);
he is at the Treetops Opera House. Then the actor with the
role of Mustardseed is at the Walbrooke and the one playing
Pinch at the Valley (10). The latter is Mr. Cesar (17), with
Mr. Hamlett then in the Walbrooke Theatre play. James is
portraying Dr. Butts in Henry VIII at the Treetops (3);
Mr. Anthony is Sly in The Taming of the Shrew. Leon
isn't Mr. McBeth (7) or Mr. Anthony (11) and isn't in the
Valley Playhouse production (7); Leon is Hamlett. Albert
isn't Mr. McBeth (4) or Mr. Anthony (11); Albert is Mr. Cesar.
Finally, by clue 16, Ronald is McBeth and Thomas Anthony.
The five aspiring actors and their first Shakespearean roles
are
- Albert Cesar, Pinch in A Comedy of Errors at the Valley Playhouse
- James Otelo, Dr. Butts in Henry VIII at the Treetops Opera House
- Leon Hamlett, Mustardseed in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Walbrooke Theatre
- Ronald McBeth, Wart in Henry IV at the Summerset Center for the Arts
- Thomas Anthony, Sly in The Taming of the Shrew at the Union Bridge Amphitheater
