Logic Problem Solution: It's a Dog's Life From the introduction, the dog owners of 16 Summerset terrace live in apartments two to a floor with 1A, 2A, and 3A on one side and 1B, 2B, and 3B on the other side of the building. By clue 6, the Witts live on the 2nd or 3rd floor of 16 Summerset Terrace. First, we try the Witts on the 2nd floor: by clue 6, the Witts live directly above the Chow Chow owners, who live directly across the hall from the family whose pet is named Gunnar; the latter two families would live on the 1st floor. By clue 10, the family whose pet is named Spike lives directly above the Terrier owners, who are across the hall from the Manns. In clue 6, then, the family whose pet is Spike couldn't be the Witts, who live above the Chow Chow owners; couldn't live above the people whose pet is Gunnar, since then the Manns would own the Chow Chow and don't (2); and can't live on the 3rd floor on the opposite side from the Witts, since then the Manns and Witts would have to have the same apartment. Spike's owners would live directly above the Witts, who would have a Terrier, and the Manns would live across the hall from the Witts. By clue 8, the Hills live directly above Lucky's owners, who would then live on the 2nd floor. However, there is now no way for pets Pete and Willis in clue 9 to live on the same floor. So, in clue 6, the Witts live on the 3rd floor, directly above the Chow Chow owners, who live across the hall from the family whose dog is Gunnar. By clue 10, the family whose pet is Spike lives directly above the Terrier owners, who are directly across the hall from the Manns. Spike can't be the Witts' pet, since the Witts live above the Chow Chow owners. The Terrier can't be Gunnar, since then the Manns would have the Chow Chow and don't (2). Spike must be the Chow Chow. By clue 10, therefore, the Terrier owners live in the 1st floor apartment directly under the people who have Spike, and the Manns live directly under Gunnar's owners. By clue 8, the Hills live directly above the family whose pet is named Lucky. The Hills can't be Spike's family, since Lucky isn't a Terrier (1). The Hills have Gunnar as a pet, and Lucky belongs to the Manns. By clue 9, the families with pets Pete and Willis live on the same floor, which must be the 3rd. The Witts don't have Willis (3), so their dog is Pete; and Willis's family is across the hall from the Witts. By elimination, Britney is the Terrier. Then Lucky is a Poodle (7). By clue 4, the family with the Shih Tzu lives directly above the Duffs; the Shih Tzu must be the Witts' dog, and the Duffs own Spike. By clue 11, the Cobbs have Britney as their pet; and the Barrs are Willis's family. Willis is a Dachshund and Gunnar a Schnauzer (5). The Barrs live in 3B (12), so the Hills are in 2B and the Manns in 1B. The Witts have apartment 3A, the Duffs 2A, and the Cobbs 1A. The six dogs live at 16 Summerset Terrace as follows:
