Logic Problem Solution:
Going Up With the Stars
By clue 1, Sam got off the elevator 8 floors after Davis, who got
off 4 floors after the TV game show host; while by clue 4, Chase
got off 6 floors after Alan, who got off 3 floors after the
stand-up comedian did. Since six men are named, there must be
some commonality between clues 1 and 4. Sam can't be Chase, or,
combining clues 1 and 4, Alan would have gotten off 6 floors
before Sam, Davis would have gotten off 8 floors before Sam,
the comedian would have gotten off 9 floors before Sam, and
the TV game show host would have gotten off 12 floors before Sam
and first--contradicting clue 7. Sam also can't be the comedian,
or, combining clues 1 and 4, the TV game show host would have gotten
off first--no (7). So Sam is the fourth celebrity to the three in
clue 4. If Davis were Alan, then Sam would have gotten off the
elevator 8 floors after Davis, Chase would have gotten off 6 floors
after Davis, the comedian would have gotten off 3 floors before
Davis, and the TV host would have gotten off 4 floors before Davis
and thus first--again no (7). If Davis were the comedian, Alan
would have gotten off the elevator 3 floors after Davis, Chase
would have gotten off 6 floors after Davis, Sam would have gotten
off 8 floors after Davis, and the TV host would have gotten off
4 floors before Davis and first--once more, no (7). So, Davis in
clue 1 is the fifth elevator rider to the three in clue 4 and
Sam. The TV game show host in clue 1 then must be either Chase
or Alan in clue 2. If the TV host were Alan, combining clues 1
and 4 given that the first celebrity to get off the elevator did
so on floor 2 (7), the comedian would have gotten off on 2, Alan
the game show host on 5, Davis on 9, Chase on 11, and Sam on 17.
By clue 2, Walker got off the elevator immediately before the rock
star did; Walker would have to be Alan, and Davis would be the
rock star--which Davis isn't (6). So, the TV game show host
in clue 1 must be Chase in clue 4. Combining clues 1 and 4, the
comedian got off on floor 2 (7), Alan on 5, Chase on 11, Davis on
15, and Sam on 23. By clue 2, Walker is the stand-up comedian,
and Alan is the rock star. By clue 8, Sam is Batteaux and Alan
Hampton. Sam is an actor and Davis a network news anchor (3).
Walker isn't Michael (5) or Robert (9) and is Jeffrey. By clue 3,
anchorman Davis is Robert, and Michael is Chase. The celebrities
got off the Summerset Hotel elevator in order
- Jeffrey Walker, stand-up comedian, 2
- Alan Hampton, rock star, 5
- Michael Chase, TV game show host, 11
- Robert Davis, network news anchor, 15
- Sam Batteaux, actor, 23
